Construction of Etembura Camp

09/05/2010
  • For the next few weeks the low range grumble of a truck laden to the hilt with building materials, labouring towards Orupembe Conservancy through dry river beds and across rutted mountain tracks, will be carried with the wind across mountains and plains until it falls silent at Onjuva, site of Etambura Camp, on a hilltop with 360° views that will take your breath away.

  • Long awaited construction of this first Himba-owned camp for the exclusive use of Conservancy Safari guests is to begin at last after lengthy negotiations with the Conservancy, an Environmental Impact Assessment has been completed and authorisation has been granted by the Land Board.  Five accommodation units each with its own private deck and en-suite bathroom, plus a recreational area are being erected to blend in with the rugged environment.

  • Meticulous care is being taken to protect and preserve the unique indigenous vegetation flourishing amidst the characteristic marble outcrops jutting into the skyline, overlooking miles and miles of wild untamed Africa.  Despite difficult logistics, harsh terrain and the challenge of building on a hilltop, construction is expected to be completed by the end of June 2010.
